Adam Lambert on Performing New Song on ‘Idol,’ Addresses Sam Smith Dating Rumors
A few hours after releasing his new single “Welcome to the Show,” Adam Lambert will return to his American Idol stomping grounds to debut the live performance.
The track, featuring Swedish singer-songwriter Laleh, is a tinged with electrifying synthetic beats and melancholy lyrics of self-acceptance. “I’m gonna let them stare,” he sings. “They feel like me out there / so welcome to the show / bring on all the lights / let it shine on you.”
“I’m so excited to debut this thing,” he told On Air with Ryan Seacrest over the phone Thursday. “It’s exciting because it’s kind of a different vibe for me and I really dig it — I like it.”
Lambert, who was a finalist on Season 8 of Idol, spring-boarded off his fame from the singing competition and went on to produce three studio albums and front legendary rock band, Queen. “I’m doing more with [Queen] this summer,” he teased. “I’m so spoiled. I feel like I get the best of both worlds. I get to be doing current music myself, and I get to kind of revisit the classics with them.”
The singer’s global fame also puts him in the tabloids’ crosshairs. Recently, Lambert got really close to Sam Smith in a DJ booth at No. 8, a nightclub in New York City. Naturally, the photo, which was shared on Instagram, made headlines and sparked dating rumors.
“We bumped into each other at a club in New York a couple weeks ago and had few drinks with our friends,” he explained. “We’re laughing and taking pictures and all of a sudden … who knows what!”
He also added that Smith texted him about the rumors and revealed, “We were laughing so hard. We were like, ‘What the hell?’ I Love the rumor mill!”
You can purchase “Welcome to the Show” on iTunes now. Be sure to catch Lambert on Idol tonight (March 17) at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
