Vocal powerhouse Adam Lambert has recently dropped his latest album ‘VELVET: Side A’ (with a Side B enroute) and we can’t say were anything but obsessed… After teasing us with various promo singles over the last few months; he’s dropped a bold 6-track album and we can’t get enough.
‘Superpower’ opens the record and it’s got the making of a 70s rock song… think ‘For Your Entertainment’ era with a bit more glam rock… “all of the witches and the demons better get out my way”, he purrs over the first verse and the track is likely to get you rallied up for a strong collection and throughout the album, his vocal prowess ignites us… Key moments on the album come in the form of ‘Overglow’, which almost has an 80s Pet Shop Boys vibes to it and it’s a little bit different sonically for Adam, but nevertheless, it’s a stand out moment on the record and the chorus is likely to stick in your head… we literally have “neoooon blue” stuck in our head and it’s literally one lyric from the song. ‘Closer To You’ is a sentimental, heart-wrenching ballad that will grab at your heart strings… the track is Adam at his most vulnerable and it’s truly beautiful as he yearns for his lover “whatever gets me closer to you”, he pines on the chorus and your heart will break… we all know he’s a power house vocalist; but this particular track showcases it more than ever… It’s one you can imagine watching live and there not being a dry eye in the audience.
‘Loverboy’ brings us back to a 70s funk vibe and it’s a playful and cheeky moment on the album as Adam sings on the track “you wanna get touchy-feely / better not be so greedy” and it revels in the fact that Adam’s lover seems to not want anything more from him than to spend the night and Adam wants a little bit more…. ‘Stranger You Are’ is a pure rock star moment as Adam gives us a little bit of a huskier vocal during the verses before purring on the track “but I’m 6’3″, baby, with boots on” (fun fact – were actually the same height; see image below). Closing track ‘Ready To Run’ is a camp and another rock star moment for Adam and would make to a wonderful tour opener…
The only issue we have here with ‘VELVET: Side A’ is how short it is! We want more… but with a Side B on it’s way… Adam is feeding us thirsty types bit by bit! Were going to be super intrigued to see what makes Side B from the track he’s released pre-Side A.
